Ocaquatics Transforms Pandemic Problem into a FORCE for GOOD

Camila Julien - Regional Manager of Ocaquatics • October 3, 2022

When the pandemic hit in 2020 and Ocaquatics had to pause its in-person swim instruction, we decided to use the time to increase our ability to use our company as a FORCE for GOOD. So, we made B Corp Certification a top priority. B Corp provides a way for businesses to objectively measure themselves and discover implementable ideas for improvement. We had already been working on this for several years, because we want to do more than teach a life-saving skill. We want to benefit people and the planet. The pandemic gave us the opportunity to really concentrate on this part of our purpose.

Since that time, Ocaquatics has introduced multiple efforts towards more sustainability, including becoming a member of 1% For the Planet, Certified Carbon Neutral, a partner of Conscious Capitalism and a Top Workplace ranking from the Sun Sentinel for the last 5 years. https://www.ocaquatics.com/force-for-good For us, transparency and accountability is key when it comes to working with a triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.

Becoming a FORCE for GOOD and receiving B Corp Certification takes time. It has been a work in progress since 2016. At Ocaquatics, we did it with intentionality, care, and consideration - one step at a time. We also did not get discouraged when we were initially denied certification. We used it as a learning moment to improve. It’s more about the journey than the destination.

To keep the momentum going, we are implementing One Ocaquatics: Excellence Through Consistency Right now we are working to improve and align all of the systems and procedures in the entire school. Feedback is key. We’ve learned to love it! At Ocaquatics, we continue to work every day to become a better business for our team, our swimmers, our community, and the planet.

You can transform things too! Start right where you are. Ask yourself, what matters most to me regarding my people (family, team members, clients)?, my community? and my planet? Another way of thinking about it is to ask yourself, “What do I want to see changed or improved or transformed?” or “What breaks my heart so much that I want to do something about it?”
