The Top 4 Reasons Ocaquatics Is a Great Job for High School Students

Most first jobs never make it on to a resume – but here’s an exception

Last year, children between the ages of 4 and 14 received an average allowance of $454. That’s according to a survey of 10,000 users polled by allowance-tracker RoosterMoney. Earning an allowance is important because it teaches children how to spend and save. Those are financial habits they’ll start developing as young as 7 years old, according to a University of Cambridge study.

The RoosterMoney study looked at allowances given to kids up to the age of 14, who averaged $12.26 weekly. After that age, many teenagers start looking for after-school jobs. Let’s face it: $12.26 won’t even get you a ticket and a tub of popcorn at the theater. We’ve been in business for almost 25 years now – long enough to see many children we taught to swim return to us to fill part-time jobs in their high school years. Here are the top three reasons why.

1. Gain real-world experience

Professional development experts say that technical expertise can be taught, but employers expect you to have already mastered interpersonal and communication skills. One of our core values is “Always Learning.” Ocaquatics team members receive constant support, coaching, mentoring, and feedback. We strive to help everyone get better when they work with us. When you move on, you’ll have gained tremendous experience in many skills.

The training doesn’t stop there. All employees have the opportunity to take American Red Cross certified courses in CPR and first aid, as well as certifications to be a lifeguard or a water safety instructor. Ocaquatics pays for all of this training and certification.

2. School/work balance

Many high school students find it difficult to balance a part-time job with the demands of school.

Ocaquatics welcomes high school students who are at least 16 years old for part-time positions that fit their schedules perfectly. These positions have weekday hours of 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Schedules are flexible.

An after-school high school job with Ocaquatics is a powerful introduction to time management. But our team members don’t learn it the hard way. We were students once, too. We encourage our high school age team members to put their studies first and to take on a schedule they can handle.

3. Get a jump start on your resume

It’s an important document that follows us through our career, and it’s never too early to start building a resume. Most high school jobs are retail oriented. However, a part-time after-school position with Ocaquatics requires training and certification that can be highlighted on a resume to catch the attention of a future employer.

4. Worthwhile and rewarding work

There are few things more important than finding satisfaction in what you do for a living. Our goal at Ocaquatics is to help our team members find a job that is both personally rewarding where you can make a difference! Working in a swim school helps make families SAFER around the water and saves lives. That in itself is a rewarding experience.
