However, when practicing without your teacher nearby, make sure to always swim in a lifeguarded pool. You should also swim in the shallow end of the pool so you can stand up when you get tired.

Get comfortable placing your head under the water

Most swimming strokes require your head to be underwater for some amount of time, so it’s important to get used to having your face under water. Your teacher will again show you techniques that help when holding your breath underwater. The more that you practice placing your head underwater, the easier transition will be to learning actual swimming strokes.
